The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro Book Review

The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro

Five Star Review

Castro weaves a haunting tale of motherhood that reaches through the pages, grips reader’s hearts, and squeezes tight. Alejandra is a stay-at-home mother whose identity has gotten lost in the shuffle of daily mundane activities. Her condescending husband is no help as Alejandra spirals into a deep depression and begins seeing haunting visions. Desperate to fight her way out of the darkness, she consults a therapist and together, they dig into Alejandra’s Mexican heritage to search for a way to combat the growing ghostly threat. It’s up to Alejandro to face her demons in order to survive.

Castro’s masterful horror takes readers through generations of Mexican women’s lives and the struggles they endured. Each point-of-view digs into the women’s sorrow, but it also shines a light on their love for their children and a strong connection with their heritage. Alejandra is relatable; she loves her children but feels the heaviness and loneliness of being a mother. Her search for identity mirrors reality, and Alejandra’s strength transcends the page and provides inspiration for those also hurting.

The haunting story of La Llorona (a tragic tale of a mother who drowned her children) intertwines with the characters and plot using a fresh and compelling perspective. Horror elements terrify thanks to Castro’s visceral descriptions. Heavy themes of family, resilience, and motherhood saturate the pages and leave the reader wanting more. Those looking for an emotional journey of self-discovery will devour this expertly crafted horror.

Readers who enjoyed Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder and Full Immersion by Gemma Amor will enjoy the deep emotional journey of The Haunting of Alejandra. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Black Tide by KC Jones Book Review

Black Tide Book Review

KC Jones takes readers on a apocalyptical sci-fi thrill ride. Beth is a house and dog sitter looking for companionship when she meets Mike, the loner next door neighbor. A cataclysmic event occurs that spirals the world into chaos and leaves Mike, Beth, and the dog she's sitting, fighting for their lives.

The action and horror aspects will keep readers entertained, but some may have to suspend their disbelief when it comes to the characters' ability to fight considering their grave physical wounds. The sci-fi premise is intriguing and while this plot doesn't contain twists, it does strategically drop information about the mysterious event leaving readers heavily invested in the outcome. The setting is largely singular, with the vast amount of the story taking place in a single spot, which some readers may enjoy, but others will find this actually hinders the ability of the premise to fully bloom.

This book is a mix of Predators and Bird Box and will entertain sci-fi horror fans looking for a quick paced read.

4 Star Book Review

Every once in a while, I come across a diamond in the rough that makes me say, “I didn’t know I needed a book about wrestlers, Nazis, twisted love, and dinosaurs, but thank goodness it exists!”

This book is B-O-N-K-E-R-S in the best possible way! Fassel’s fast-paced sci-fi horror mashup is a perfect escape from reality. Quentin is a trouble protagonist with love and career success on his mind. The poor, um, “guy” can’t catch a break, and he ends up alone, longing for companionship, devising a rather twisted plot to fulfill his need. There’s a dash of gore for the horror fans, some unusual technology for the sci-fi lovers, and enough wresting references to appease the biggest Sasha Banks fan.

But if wrestling isn’t your thing, don’t worry. All readers will quickly sink into this bizarre reality, eagerly soaking up the vivid descriptions and unsavory characters until the final moments. While some may feel this book ended a bit abruptly, that just means the imaginative plot did its job of captivating an audience. Readers who have been sinking into the Rewind or Die series will easily make the transition to Fassel’s novel which has the same campy vibe. This is an author to watch!

Desperado Dino by Dunkie Tang #BookReview

Desperado Dino 4 Star Book Review

desperado dino book cover.jpg

This is another Unnerving Rewind or Die book, and once again, it doesn’t disappoint. I know you might be thinking I’m biased, since I am a Rewind or Die author, but I took off my author hat and put on my book reviewer hat to assess this book. It’s wild!

While many other books in this series start off with a jolt, this one is a little slower to get to the B-movie fun. It starts serious and twisted as we’re introduced to the killers. Desperado Dino makes her entrance a little later, and again, the tone is rather stark, reading like a crime drama. That’s not a criticism. It’s extremely well developed and the writing is top notch, but the subject content is a bit hard to swallow at times.

Desperado Dino is the stage name Linda Tompkins, a stripper who is desperate for money. Linda has a stalker, which takes the book down a dark disturbing rabbit hole. I’ll be honest. By the halfway point, I was ready to put it down. Not because of anything the author did. Again, the book is well written. I just preferred not to read the subject content.

Then, everything bonkers. I mean B-O-N-K-E-R-S! And the B-movie love prevalent in the Rewind or Die series came to light.

I can’t say much about the second half without spoiling it other than it took me on a wild adventure, and it was worth reading the first bit to get to the craziness of the last part.

So I recommend giving it a read. The characters are fun, the plot is well developed, the dialogue is great. 4 stars.

Helena by Claire L. Smith #BookReview

Helena Book Review

4 stars

Helena is a fun fast-paced mystery horror book set in the 1800s and staring a strong female protagonist. Helena Morrigan is a mortician and funeral home director who can see ghosts. Unfortunately, her circumstances lead her to take up residency in an old home on the brink of a graveyard. While this creates obstacles for Helena, it weaves a fun mystery for readers as Helena finds herself in the web of a serial killer and his victims.

The gothic elements great a dark and macabre tone, set from the opening chapter where we are first introduced to Helena and her unique ability. Her arch starts as a woman with little self-confidence and blossoms into a heroine who courageously battles evil. She’s a bold character with many likeable and relatable traits. In fact, all the female characters were extremely well developed and came alive from the page. Since this plot was set in the 1800s, it would have been easy to create females more stereotypical of how females were perceived in that time period, but these women challenge those conventions, and thank goodness for that!

I enjoyed the horror elements of this book but I’m not sure I would classify it as a horror novel. The mystery elements outweigh the horror, and while there are stark and vivid horror descriptions, those who enjoy a strong dose of horror might be a little disappointed. However, those who enjoy atmospheric horror without the overwhelming guts and gore will find a pleasurable read in the handful of disturbing imagery and themes. (Think more along the lines of The Alienist and Penny Dreadful in terms of horror.)

Overall, it was a fun quick read with some unsettling scenes and a solid mystery plot. Thank you for the free ARC!
